Who We Are

Our Story

SH Build has proudly served the Northern Territory since 2002. From our beginnings as a sole trading business, Scott Hammet Building & Carpentry, we’ve grown into a large Commercial, Civil & Remote construction company running multiple sites within the Territory. With the experience and capability to deliver projects of all sizes, from local community works to large-scale commercial and civil projects. We operate across three headquarters, Humpty Doo (Darwin) and Gove (Nhulunbuy) and our remote logistics team. The combination of local knowledge, skilled teams and a commitment to quality with a strong focus on safety ensures us the ability to build successful infrastructure.

Scott Hammet, Director of SHBuild, began the company’s journey in Alice Springs, constructing demountables across remote communities throughout Central Australia and the wider Territory.

Over time, that work established a strong presence across the Northern Territory, building projects in both remote and urban environments across Northern Australia and beyond.

This foundation in remote construction has shaped the business into what it is today, expanding into civil and commercial sectors. More than building capability, it developed a deep understanding of the landscape and a respect for the people, culture and traditions of the regions we work in.

These principles continue to guide how every project is approached.

Early Growth and Remote Community Focus

In our early years, we focused on residential and commercial builds around Greater Darwin. As we built our reputation for quality workmanship and reliable delivery, we started taking on more complex projects in remote communities. We know what it takes to operate in challenging locations: logistics, cultural understanding, and genuine community engagement.

Expanding into Government Contracts and Private Education entities

Our excellent track record in remote community delivery includes schools, health facilities, and essential infrastructure across the Northern Territory. Each project has strengthened our capability to meet the unique demands of each Territory community.

Building Specialist Capabilities

Our concrete batching plant, fully equipped logistics fleet and twin engine plane sets us apart meaning we mobilise anywhere. From building disaster recovery systems to delivering space projects, we have the experience and resources to take on diverse and challenging construction works.

Operations

Our team of Territory based staff includes a dedicated remote operations crew. We operate from regional offices in Humpty Doo and Nhulunbuy (Gove) each housing large-scale machinery yards.

Our Workforce and Community Commitment

Our committed core team has been with us for over 15 years. We look after our primary assets – our people.  We’ve built a large-scale team with a focus on quality and safety, supported by a reliable group of subcontractors.

We don’t just operate in communities we’re part of them. We draw our workforce from the communities we work in, including a strong team of Indigenous staff. We invest heavily in upskilling our crews to meet quality and safety requirements and keep pace with changing legislation and safety standards.

Sustainability & Environment

Committed to reusing materials and reducing waste, we salvaged the bricks from the old Bathurst Island hospital demolition and turned them into something the community could use. Here’s Len, a local Indigenous worker, building a BBQ for the community of Wurrumiyanga. Small build, bigger meaning.

We are sustainable.

Waste segregation, reuse of materials, responsible disposal, structured planning to minimise site disturbance, local suppliers and contractors, efficient logistics and water management — this is how we build.
